At that point, the Cowboys will decide whether he needs surgery. (Surgery could sideline Witten for several regular season games.) For now, the Cowboys' hope is that Witten will heal with simple rest and rehab. The injury is officially being labeled a "slightly lacerated" spleen, and the Cowboys are taking it "very serious(ly)." It's a big red flag on Witten's 2012 fantasy value.

The Cowboys play Seattle in Week 2. Giants-Cowboys is the NFL opener on Wednesday, September 5, which lessens Witten's recovery time ahead of the first game. Witten's absence would be a big blow to Dallas' chances in the division matchup. He's critical as an edge blocker against Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul, and has historically given the Giants all kinds of problems as a receiver. John Phillips and James Hanna figure to share the position in the meantime. We'd continue to balk at drafting Witten to be our fantasy TE1.

Witten underwent another round of testing on Tuesday. Doctors can't say that he'll definitely be cleared in time for next Wednesday's opener against the Giants, but the diagnosis was positive enough for a "questionable" tag. If the decision is left up to Witten, we know that he'll play. He hasn't missed a single game since 2003. John Phillips has been running as the first-team tight end in Witten's absence.

We still don't have the exact results of Witten's Tuesday CT scan, but a league source tells ProFootballTalk that he won't play in Wednesday night's opener. It may be a case of the Cowboys' doctors exercising caution. By holding him out, he'll get another 10 full days of rest and rehab before suiting up against the Seahawks in Week 2. Witten has avoided serious injury.
